September Minutes - Friday the 12th 2003:

Septembers gathering was held at what used to be Zanzibar which was now known as Gourmet Coffee & Tea and by next month will be known as Nam Viet, a French Vietnamese restaurant. We've been on a search for our new meeting location to finalize and it will be announced on the mailing list, this site and on the forums when it has been set.

People gathered around 7:30PM outside of Zanzibar, the crowd grew quickly and we moved inside to start the announcements and discussions at 8:00PM. For those wondering what happened to August's meeting it was held in Las Vegas during DEFCON XI Saturday evening for obvious reasons there will not be a page on it instead a link to our collection of pictures from the convention.

After appointing people into positions to assist with the group we went over what we planned on doing over the next few months and where Irvine Underground was to go from there. Currently we have the following attached to positions to assist with the growth and interactions of the group.

Founders: Freaky, Miss Turtle, Lei, Bartender
Social Directors: Miss Turtle, KeLvin
Head of Programming: blackwave
Location Management: Bartender
Discussion Coordinator: Tactitus

After talking about the positions we went over what happened at defcon and gave out t-shirts to those who did not pick them up at the convention and to those who needed one.

DaMan started the night by doing his first presentation on Ethereal explaining what it is, what it does and how it does it. DaMan's KeyNote presentation is available here. Ethereal is a Network analyzer for packets sniffing that will run on numerous operating systems including what DaMan presented from, a Mac OS X machine. DaMan did a live presentation on how the application worked by going over and explaining different features and functions by analyzing the data Kallahar was sending to DaMan's machine.

Kallahar presented to the group after a brief recess a discussion/presentation on personal firewalls explaining the differences between personal firewalls and hardware firewalls using DaMan's projector to get his points across with his pictures. He then proceeded to demonstrate Kerio personal firewall how it works, how to configure in multi level environments and did a full Q&A along the way. DaMan interacted with Kallahar by sending traffic showing what was allowed and disallowed by the firewall.

After the discussions people broke up, blackwave took those interested in programming into a breakout session talking about what the plans were and figuring out what people knew and what they wanted to do. Discussion continued all night on various topics relating to electronics, hacking, security, Wi-Fi and the announcement of the soon to be community linux box.

Stay tuned for Octobers meeting location details.
