Hello IVUer’s

Thanks for coming to IVU the Friday before Easter (or Bunny & Eggs Day) . There were a whole 11 people there and you still missed out one some good fun. We talked about a slue of things and brought a new member up to speed on how things are intended to be run. Certainly not an impressive showing for new members, but in the end even they left the evening laughing and learning.

Israel, your cryptographic wonders and postings have mused yet another sole. Please keep up the good showing and maybe one day someone will be able to solve your challenge.

Until next month. Talk to you all soon. Please do not forget to join our mailing list.

Irvine Underground’s September meeting was held at iHOP. For those who remember the early years of IVU this was the fourth meeting location we migrated to and we have come back for more pancakes!

The meeting is held upstairs at the iHOP across from SNA (John Wayne Airport) every second Friday of the month. This was the first meeting after DEF CON so the turn out was good and information was flowing.

IVU was at DEF CON in force and will be at Toorcon happening September 26th-28th in San Diego, California.

Israel Torres presented Crypto Challenge at this meeting going over last months challenge and this months challenge. For those unaware what crypto challenge is, a week or so before the meeting Israel posts to the IVU mailing list a challenge, if someone can crack the code they are presented with a treat. The tools are available on his website for the cracking and he is available online for questions pertaining to the contest.

Argus was the second presenter for the evening demonstrating and explaining TOR privacy and security. His slideshows are available here.

Basic outline of presentation (by aRgus)

Intro:
What is Tor/Onion Routing?
How does Tor Work?
Tools used in concert with Tor
Using Tor:
Anonymous browsing
Anonymous IRC
Using Tor for No-contact Network Recon
Web based attacks via Tor

Caveats:
How you’re still vulnerable
DNS Leaks etc.

Presentation response (by Bartender)

The presentation given was easily understood by novices and advanced users. It presented a good introduction of both concept and theory. Just demoing live practice or getting into the TCP/IP layer, this presentation clearly demonstrated a working knowledge of basics such as encryption, protocols, and the communication maps that Tor uses. Some of the listeners perked up when the it was realized that their ability to use Tor greatly increases their anonymity, security, and runs inline with or along with tools they may already be using.

Tor Project Abstract (from http://www.torproject.org)

“Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. Tor provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy. (…more…)”

<end of response>

IVU raffled off the Headshot shirts featuring the agent blowing off the back of the hackers heads with a little challenge in the background prepared for the taking if anyone is willing. The shirt is aviailable here, and the challenge is at IsraelTorres.org.

This months IVU had a great crowd and great turnout. There were some new faces and some old friends who came out of the woodwork (OK jigsaw isn’t that old). The lock pick board was brought out and a handful of people brushed up on their picking skill sets throughout the evening.

The speech this night was given by Israel regarding how to properly use bump keys, without that is ruining anyones locks. The demonstration was so good even the pizza girl (A.K.A. S.T. Stone?) was able to get into the action and was able to bump 4 dead bolt locks in under a minute. Aside from that Harry showed off an alternative method to getting out of handcuffs using your car keys which surprised a few people.

With Defcon around the corner Bartender gave a sizable speech regarding his favorite hobbies, drinking beer and robots and when they came together under the event named “KegBot”.

Our raffle prizes this month where hands full of old hack-zines (which Chris? contributed back to the group as the first entry into the IVU library, thanks man!) and the grand prize being free pass to DefCon coming up in August!

HTMLTron demonstrated his Apple TV what its capabilities were and how to upgrade the hard disk by taking it apart. lei demonstrated his coil gun using an old disposable camera and magnet wire (solid copper wire insulated with an enamel coating). Pizza and soda (and buffalo wings)… I had too many energy drinks (energy drinks + no food = bad deal). Daman had a hardware giveaway (SCSI Scanner, Laser Printer, Deskjet Printer). Freaky and Kallahar were taking pictures and hopefully posts them up on IVU’s site. Overall the meeting was filled with fun intelligent folks that enjoyed talking tech… it was certainly a pleasure attending.

Welcome to the November Minutes page. We met this 2nd Friday at Extreme Pizza in Irvine. For those of you who were there, thanks for coming, and for those of you following in spirit, thanks for doing so.

Has anyone ever built or worked with a project and integrated circuits? There is a fine group of individuals who enjoy camping and the greater outdoors, but asking them to leave their geekiness behind might be a bit much. As a representative of this group, Kallahar brought in a box of goodies which included a wafer, some wires, a few alligator attachments, and a genius of design. Kallahar presented a motion detecting FRS Transmitting device they built to protect their campsite while they were off. Needed to be there to see it. I was completely impressed. I think I would have just spent my $120 to go buy a market equivalent.

2ndly we had a show of hardware by our Fearless robot leader VarX & Company. Just a demo of where projects can lead. if anyone wants to write some code or work on expanding this project please let me know. We have some big ideas and only a half a year before we need to show again.

Thirdly IVU had one of the longest hang out sessions outside after closing hours that I have witnessed in quite some time. New faces, new conversation, and some results of code from our previous meeting.

Lets do it again.

Thanks for coming everyone, and I’ll see you next time.

Welcome to the minutes page. At this meeting we scared the hell out of people who were willing to look over shoulders. It all started with me (Bartender) wondering why my Internet connection went away and came back. It was very frustrating and then I caught a glimpse of Kallahar smirking.

Here is how the meeting started:

Bartender: Hey Kallahar, are you f—-ing with my net?
Kallahar: hehehe. Yeah..
Bartender: Ok thought you might be. What are you doing?
Kallahar: I am trying to “Man in the middle you”

Ok so does anyone here know what “man in the middle” means?

Well now we have a presentation. Thanks

Also This meeting we talked about ToorCon, We had 1 or 2 new faces and a couple recent return (2nd timer) geeks, we had pizza, drinks, and good laughs. We also hung around outside and watched a drunk guy almost crash into Fatburger (right next to Extreme Pizza) in his car. I passed off a DVD of OpenSUSE to a newbie who asked many questions. Hey buddy, email me with how it worked out or post to the forum so we can read about it.

I am still trying to figure out how to do a work around for integrating the front page into the Forum Session. It isn’t working to well for me. If someone can help me figure out a work around for cookies that would be great. PHPBB does not allow the cookies to cross subdomains on the same site. Ok So I know this is proably a security breach but, hey we are hackers. Anyone know how it works, post some ideas or tips.

Coming Up Next for the site:
- Links to Our So Cal Asterisk Group
- And a Bigger and Better button leading to forums.

Thanks for coming everyone, and I’ll see you next time.

Welcome to September 06. Thank you to the regulars who attended and the two new faces. Hope to see you two again.

This as our quickest and most punctual meeting ever. IVU has been well known in the past for having some insanely long meetings and some insanely unorganized meeting, but for this meeting things were different. We started promptly at 8:02 and ended by 8:50. The meeting had a slide presentation [_Found here_] and a slideshow of defcon photo’s taken by VariableX and H20. Most of which can find by going to www.defconpics.org and surfing around.

As for the basics if you don’t download the presentation, here is some links to the events we discussed:

http://www.defcon.org [# XIV ]
http://www.ccc.de/

Things to expect as follow up from this meeting:
** Possible location hunting
** Possible completion of our IVU widget
……. Here is some accomplishment
……. Widget #1 with Meeting time and two nice buttons
and
……. Widget #2 with RSS and Meeting Time

** Add functionality to the website

** and as you can tell fast turn time on meeting minutes and updates on next meeting info

As for Future events or site listed above. keep your eyes and ears open for Toorcon on our forums or with our group. I know for a fact a handful of us are going. So lets all network. More information can be found on: http://www.toorcon.org and will be discussed on the [IVU Forums]

Welcome to August. The events of Defcon were outstanding as always. For those of you who had the pleasure of visiting the event know exactly what happened. Those of you who didn’t, let’s put forth the glamor of the event.

There was no glamor, just drinking, coding, selling, buying, and geekishness in abundance. For the IVU organizers there was Robot competitions, Vendor Booths, Booth Babes, and Transportation needs all weekend long.

The positive highlights of the evening worth noting or searching for are the results of our 2nd Place robot team, Our amazingly large backdrop in the Vendor Area joined with two very gorgeous booth babes, and our sad to mention meeting/party.

IVU attempted to throw a party and have a meeting but due to new venues, an overwhelming amount of competition in the party arena, and some unfortunate luck with hotel muck ups, the group was not so successful. Yes you heard from the horses mouth. I (Bartender) was the first to aim for drunken stupor due to the sadness incurred by our event. I succeeded.

This months IVU was a small meeting of minds who came together during a warm California night, to discuss topics ranging from novice to expert. The meeting began shortly after 8pm as pizzas were ordered, and the presenter for the evening was DaMan who spoke about Asterisk@home. This months IVU ended early but even as the night wound down everyone continued their conversations throughout the parking lot in the mild weather.

This month we met a few new faces and a few not-so new people. The majority of IVU was still in San Fransico for the MacWorld expo. We were given a quick run-down of the new technologies by HTMLtron and Bartender who had returned a day early to attend IVU. Apple has released a new iMac and Laptop the .MacBook Pro. both using the new Intel processors.

The presentation on Asterisk@home helped inform novice VOIP users to the opportunities that Asterisk (the open source PBX) offers. DaMan covered topics from how easy installation goes to how-to setup asterisk in a business environment.

Just before IVU wrapped up an IVU member who wished to remain anonymous handed me a hacked disposable digital camera. I quickly took some snapshots for the IVU minutes page here.
